St. John's Woodworking, Inc.,  was started in 1981 under the name Gavin Constructions.  Founder Jack Gavin began his career as a sculptor, doing woodworking for friends on the side.  But demand for his cabinets eventually outpaced demand for his artwork, and the sideline became a full-time business.  Today St. John's Woodworking employs twelve cabinetmakers and finishers, with 10,000 square feet of shop space and hundreds of thousands of dollars in high-tech woodworking machinery.

We are custom cabinetmakers. This means we have no inventory, but instead build each piece to our client's specification.  Since we are almost never asked to build the same thing twice, we are experienced with many different furniture styles, from Chippendale to Memphis.  And while most of our work comes through architects and designers, we also have the ability to design for our private clients.

At St. John's Woodworking, Inc., we use state-of-the-art CAD software.  Everything is built in virtual 3D before it is built in real 3D.  This allows us to catch many design problems before they happen, and also speeds our fabrication process.

We are one of the few shops in the New York area that offers custom veneer work.  This gives our clients access to some of the most beautiful woods in the world, many of which are only available in veneer form.  Additionally, through our relationships with local craftspeople, we can incorporate other materials into our work, such as glass, metal and stone.

    Some of our clients include:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Mt. Sinai Hospital; Lorne Michaels; The Frick Collection; Columbia University;  Marisa Tomei;  Broadway Video;  New-York Historical Society;  Mark Messier;  The Asia Society;  Manolo Blahnik.

These are just some of the more recognizable names we have worked for.  But whether the name is recognizable or not, we do the same very high quality workmanship for every client, and we charge the same very competitive prices to every client.

Except for this web site, we do not advertise.  Instead we rely on repeat business and word-of-mouth.  We pride ourselves on our large core of satisfied clients and our ability to turn our clients' designs into the highest quality cabinets and furniture.

We absolutely guarantee everything we build.
